A little surprise news on this Thursday afternoon! First reported by Jordan Schultz, The Chicago Bears have extended Jaylon Johnson, just two days after franchise tagging him. Of course, despite the franchise tag, Johnson could have still been extended at any point until this summer. However, Ryan Poles decided he didn’t want to wait that long and signed Johnson to an extension.

The details of the extension are 4 years, $76 million, with $54.4 million guaranteed. This makes him one of the highest paid cornerbacks in the league. Both sides got the deal done that they wanted to, and Johnson deserves it. He balled out last year and has been great for a while now. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bears extending their best man on defense. It is good for the locker room, good for Eberflus, and good for the Bears.

I love that Poles went out and extended his best player. It looked for a while that he was going to let Johnson go. There was a lot of talk about both sides wanting to get a deal done, but I’ve seen far too often those conversations occur and the sides end up going separate ways. This was always the right move, especially with the amount of cap room the Bears have. We’ll see what other moves are going to happen in the near future.
