Well, it finally happened! After months of speculation and pleading Cubs, fans got their wish as Cody Bellinger chose the make his home the North Side for the next three years. Jeff Passan broke the news in the dead of the night last night and I must say it was an excellent notification to wake up to. I was, however, a little bit bummed that they decided to announce it on 2/25/24 instead of 2/24/24 given that Bellinger’s number last year was 24. However, beggars can’t be choosers and I will take the less romantic announcement with just as much joy.
Bellinger’s contract ended up being 3 years, worth $80 million in total. He makes $30 million his first and second year, and $20 million his third year. He has the ability to opt out twice, once after the first year and once after the second year. I love this contract. If he opts out at any point, it means he had an incredible year and thinks he can get paid more. If he doesn’t and sticks around for three years, then we have Cody Bellinger for three years. If he struggles for the next three years, we have Pete Crow-Armstrong coming through the system. PCA has so much potential and if he lives up to it, the Cubs will not need Bellinger in center field (still would love for Bellinger to dominate).
The Cubs got their three-hole hitter, and Jed earned is paycheck. I am pumped about the Bellinger signing and believe the rest of the fanbase will be. I can’t wait to watch more Belli-bombs from the Bleachers at Wrigley this year. There was a time when I didn’t know if the Cubs would sign anyone this offseason, but they pulled through. I still believe there are some holes in the lineup and would love a Matt Chapman or starting pitcher signing in there, but I won’t hold my breath. I’m thrilled about the offseason so far and I hope it means the Cubs will win the division and more this year. This fanbase deserves to win, and it’s time to win again.
